Secure Socket Layer

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security protocol that encrypts data exchanged between a web server and a browser, ensuring privacy and integrity. It utilizes encryption algorithms to scramble data, authentication via digital certificates, and message authentication codes for data integrity.

Implemented with HTTP, it creates HTTPS, safeguarding against interception and tampering. Through a handshake protocol, it establishes a secure connection, with versions ranging from SSL 1.0 to TLS 1.3. SSL/TLS is fundamental for secure online communication, protecting sensitive information like login credentials and financial transactions across various platforms.

To establish an SSL connection, a web server must have an SSL Certificate installed. This certificate binds a cryptographic key to the server’s details and the site’s hostname. It undergoes verification by a trusted authority, ensuring smooth and reliable connections to the site or application. Alternatively, self-signed SSL certificates can be used, though they lack the external validation provided by trusted authorities.

AccuWeb.Cloud provides three SSL solutions to choose from

  • Built-In SSL Certificates: This option utilizes a pre-installed SSL certificate provided by the platform, saving time on certificate validation. However, it’s not compatible with public IP addresses and is only applicable to the default environment domain name (i.e., the hoster’s domain).
  • Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificates: This solution integrates a pre-configured add-on managed by the platform, simplifying and automating the process of obtaining SSL certificates from Let’s Encrypt, a free and open certificate authority. It streamlines the issuance and integration of trusted SSL certificates.
  • Custom SSL Certificates: With this option, you can manually configure your SSL certificate. This includes generating the certificate, specifying your custom domain name, and selecting your preferred Certificate Authority for validation. This option provides greater flexibility and control over the SSL certificate setup process.
