How to Update Installed New Relic Monitoring Add-on?

To stay up-to-date with the latest New Relic monitoring features, the platform includes a built-in update option for its dedicated add-on.

This option automatically checks for the latest agent versions in the relevant repositories and allows you to update them with just a few clicks, eliminating the need for manual intervention. Now, let’s take a look at how to do this!

Update Agent

New Relic Agent Update

To check for updates for your New Relic agent, go to the Add-ons section for the relevant node and find the New Relic plank.

Click the gear icon in the top corner and select the Update Agent option from the list.

In the dialog box that appears, confirm the update check by clicking Yes and wait for the platform to complete the process.

Confirm Update

If updates are available, the necessary files will be downloaded and installed.

Performing Update

Once the add-on is updated, a pop-up will appear in the top right corner of the dashboard, recommending you restart the instance for the changes to take effect.

Follow this recommendation by clicking the appropriate button next to your application server.

Restart Node

Note: If your project runs on a single app server node, restarting will cause temporary downtime, so choose an appropriate time for this operation.

If your app server is horizontally scaled, downtime will be minimized as each server instance will be restarted sequentially.

Starting with version 4.9 PaaS, you can set a delay for restarting each node within a layer, ensuring some nodes remain active during maintenance.

And that’s it! The New Relic add-on has been upgraded and is now operational.

To check the current version of your agent:

  • For Java servers: Check the logs/newrelic_agent.log file in the add-on files directory (see the server-specific path list).
  • For PHP servers: Use the phpinfo() output.

So this is how you’ll remain up to date with the newest features and improvements provided by the New Relic team.
